SUMMARY:FREE EVENING EXHIBITION TOUR: Free Play
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a glass of wine as you tour the exhibition with The Center’s curators. Free Play considers the relationship between design and creativity in social spaces dedicated to recreation and play. Inspired in part by artist Isamu Noguchi\, who believed in the power of social spaces to unite art and play in order to build community\, the project will examine the way that artists\, architects and designers have worked to create artistically thoughtful spaces for social interaction and engagement. The project will also look at play more broadly\, offering interactive opportunities that encourage individual and group play. We hope to unleash some creativity\, investigating and remembering that the unstructured\, unplugged nature of play nurtures experimentation and heightens our senses. \nPart of The Center’s BIG IDEA project Free Play. \nGenerously supported by Jeanne Meyers

SUMMARY:ARTIST TALK: Free Play with Tucker Nichols
DESCRIPTION:Join us for participating artist Tucker Nichols’s talk about the role of play\, experimentation and interactivity in his practice. Many of Nichols’s projects give museum visitors the opportunity to participate in them in some way\, from rearranging objects to create sculptural installations to making images using colorful shapes on an overhead projector. Based in Northern California\, Nichols’s work has been featured at the Drawing Center in New York\, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, the Denver Art Museum\, Den Frie Museum in Copenhagen\, and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. A show of his sculpture\, Almost Everything On The Table\, was recently on view at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum. \nHis drawings have been published in McSweeney’s\, The Thing Quarterly\, The New Yorker and the Op-Ed pages of The New York Times. He is co-author of the books\, Crabtree (with Jon Nichols) and This Bridge Will Not Be Gray (with Dave Eggers). \nGenerously supported by Jeanne Meyer. \nPart of The Center’s BIG IDEA project Free Play.

SUMMARY:FREE EVENING EXHIBITION TOUR: The Bottomlessness of a Pond: Transcendentalism\, Nature and Spirit
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a glass of wine as you tour the exhibition with The Center’s curators. The mid-19th century in the United States saw the emergence of a group of progressive thinkers who advocated for a new understanding of the relationship between the individual\, the divine and the natural world. Ralph Waldo Emerson\, Henry David Thoreau and Margaret Fuller\, among others\, came together in a shared belief in humanitarian causes and religious purpose. Transcendentalism\, as their theological and philosophical ideas became known\, embraced elements of Unitarianism and advocated for a personal knowledge of God based in a rejection of materialism in favor of a spiritual experience of nature. In the U.S.\, Transcendentalism’s ideals found their most famous embodiment in Thoreau’s retreat to Walden Pond (then believed to be bottomless)\, where he spent a year living in a small\, spare cabin\, focusing on the spiritual rewards of a life lived in harmony with nature. This BIG IDEA project offers the notion that Transcendentalism’s retreat from the material in favor of a spiritual or divine encounter with the natural is an idea that continues to be relevant—and one that is perhaps more useful now than ever before. \nPart of The Center’s BIG IDEA project The Bottomlessness of a Pond: Transcendentalism\, Nature and Spirit.

SUMMARY:FREE EXHIBITION OPENING CELEBRATION & GALLERY WALK: Marketplaces: From Open Air to Online
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the opening of Marketplaces: From Open Air to Online. Participating artists Chad Erpelding and Mark R. Smith will speak about their artwork at 6pm. The last twenty-five years have seen a transformation in the way Americans buy and sell goods and services. Recent shifts toward online shopping and big box stores\, but also the resurgence of farmers markets\, are part of our continually evolving relationship to the idea of the marketplace—a commercial space that has taken myriad forms over human history. How do we buy and sell not just goods\, but pieces of the companies that provides those goods? \nThis BIG IDEA considers the idea of the marketplace in the 21stcentury. How has our exchange of goods and services changed? What remains the same? How do our choices as consumers shape our society? \nExhibition on view Aug 30–Nov 8\, 2019.

SUMMARY:FREE EVENING EXHIBITION TOUR: Mirage: Energy\, Water and Creativity in the Great Basin with artist Laura McPhee
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a glass of wine as you tour the exhibition with The Center’s curators. Mirage considers the Great Basin\, defined by its closed watershed system\, as a uniquely dynamic landscape and source of regenerative power—a place for resource extraction\, renewable energy\, and creativity. Participating artist Laura McPhee will discuss her photographs and project Desert Chronicle. \nDefined geographically by the fact that it is a closed system\, its rivers draining internally rather than to the sea\, the Great Basin is a vast expanse of land covering much of the American West. The exhibition uses the idea of a closed watershed system as a metaphor for thinking about this uniquely dynamic landscape as a source of regenerative power: a place of resource extraction and renewable energy\, a place that has long generated creativity (including Land Art works)\, and a place of shifting boundaries. The Great Basin is also a place of contradictions\, of mystery and obscurity. It is a place that has long inspired artists drawn to its paradoxes. Each of the participating artists presents work that considers the Great Basin from a different point of view. \nExhibition on view Jun 12-Aug 23\, 2019 \nMirage: Energy\, Water and Creativity in the Great Basin is supported in part by the Robert Lehman Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:FREE PANEL DISCUSSION: Is Landscape Still Relevant in 21st Century Art?: A discussion with Jim Ballinger and Frances Ashforth\, moderated by Kristin Poole
DESCRIPTION:Immediately following the Opening Celebration\, join esteemed museum director Jim Ballinger and Mirage exhibition artist Frances Ashforth in a discussion that will explore why landscape remains an important subject for artists in 21st century America.  At this moment\, when some critics declare painting dead and many contemporary artists work in non-traditional media\, why does artwork that responds to landscape continue to resonate? How does the trajectory of landscape art mirror the time in which it is made? \nMirage: Energy\, Water and Creativity in the Great Basin is supported in part by grants from the Robert Lehman Foundation and an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. \n

SUMMARY:FREE SPECIAL EVENT: JPC After Hours Exhibition Tour—Unraveling: Reimagining Colonization in the Americas
DESCRIPTION:Join The Center’s Junior Patrons Circle for a free exhibition tour of our current exhibit\, Unraveling: Reimagining Colonization in the America. At 7:15pm\, Curator of Visual Arts\, Dr. Courtney Gilbert\, will give a short guided tour through the exhibit to start the night off. \nThe history of the colonization of the Americas has traditionally been taught as a straightforward story of European conquest of indigenous cultures and expansion across territories already settled by native peoples for millennia. What does this linear history omit? What are the possibilities for reimagining or reinterpreting colonial history from the indigenous point of view? This project revisits the colonization of the Americas\, offering alternative perspectives and narratives based both in fact and in fiction\, including some rooted in the Wood River Valley. \nPart of The Center’s BIG IDEA project Unraveling: Reimagining Colonization in the Americas\, Mar 8–May 22\, 2019. \nAttendees must be 21+ and over. \nSponsored by Patagonia Cerveza and Bon & Viv Spiked Seltzer \n      \n
