SUMMARY:FILM: Meow Wolf: Origin Story (7pm screening)
DESCRIPTION:In one of the highest adrenaline\, most unlikely success stories you’ll ever see\, Meow Wolf: Origin Story takes us through the meteoric rise of a penniless\, anarchic art collective as it attracts the support of George R.R. Martin (Game of Thrones) and morphs into a multi-million dollar corporation in just a few short years. With the opening of its instantly successful exhibition\, House of Eternal Return\, the group sets its sights on new exhibits around the world. How does a team of ragtag millennial artists become one of the most compelling new startups of this generation\, and what will they do next? Origin Story follows the seven eclectic founding members and hundreds of volunteers as they struggle with fracture\, loss\, success\, and failure over a decade – while constantly redefining themselves and what art can really be. The film is an artistic explosion in and of itself\, throwing down a kaleidoscope of color\, sound\, and music that brings this crazy\, highly inspiring ride to life. \nThe artists involved in Meow Wolf bridge play\, hard work and the question of financial viability in creating their work. Their communal approach to their projects and installations can bring a sense of play and interaction\, but also reveal the push and pull of multiple creative visions and work styles. Can work and play co-exist? \nPart of The Center’s BIG IDEA project Free Play.

SUMMARY:FILM: Love\, Gilda (7pm screening)
DESCRIPTION:LOVE\, GILDA opens a unique window into the honest and whimsical world of beloved comedian and performer Gilda Radner\, whose greatest role was sharing her story. Working with the Radner estate\, director Lisa D’Apolito unearthed a collection of diaries and personal audio and videotapes documenting her childhood\, her comedy career\, her relationships and ultimately\, her struggles with cancer. These never-before-seen-or-heard footage and journal entries form the narrative spine of the documentary\, allowing Gilda to tell her own story – through laughter and sometimes tears. \nIn the many ways that people come together to play\, improv and comedy are a powerful tool for creating a shared experience of fun. Gilda Radner was a comedian whose sense of silliness and willingness to throw herself into characters gave audiences a chance to let themselves go and connect to others. While play and comedy can bring lightness\, it also can serve as a tool to unburden ourselves and to work through difficult circumstances. Do we sometimes hide behind laughter? Is that okay? \nPart of The Center’s BIG IDEA project Free Play.

SUMMARY:FILM: Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf (7pm screening)
DESCRIPTION:The documentary\, Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf\, immerses viewers in Oudolf’s work and takes us inside his creative process\, from his beautifully abstract sketches\, to theories on beauty\, to the ecological implications of his ideas. Intimate discussions take place through all fours seasons in Piet’s own gardens at Hummelo\, and on visits to his signature public works in New York\, Chicago\, and the Netherlands\, as well as to the far-flung locations that inspire his genius\, including desert wildflowers in West Texas and post-industrial forests in Pennsylvania. As a narrative thread\, the film also follows Oudolf as he designs and installs a major new garden at Hauser & Wirth Somerset\, a gallery and arts center in Southwest England\, a garden he considers his best work yet. Piet Oudolf has radically redefined what gardens can be. \nWhat better place than a garden to invite a person to see the divine in nature? Piet Oudolf’s approach to gardens and nature gives visitors to his creations a sense of themselves in a landscape and as well as a connection to nature that is magnified by the plants and surroundings that Oudolf designs. \nPart of The Center’s BIG IDEA project The Bottomlessness of a Pond: Transcendentalism\, Nature and Spirit.

SUMMARY:FILM: The World Before Your Feet (7pm screening)
DESCRIPTION:There are 8\,000 miles of roads and paths in New York City and for the past six years Matt Green has been walking them all – every street\, park\, cemetery\, beach\, and bridge. It’s a five-borough journey that stretches from the barbershops of the Bronx to the forests of Staten Island\, from the Statue of Liberty to Times Square\, with Matt amassing a surprisingly detailed knowledge of New York’s history and people along the way. Something of a modern-day Thoreau\, Matt gave up his former engineering job\, his apartment\, and most of his possessions\, sustaining his endeavor through couch-surfing\, cat-sitting and a $15-per-day budget. He’s not sure exactly why he’s doing it\, only knowing that there’s no other way he’d rather spend his days. Executive produced by Oscar (R) nominee Jesse Eisenberg\, The World Before Your Feet is a tribute to an endlessly fascinating city and the freedom to be found\, wherever you live\, in simply taking a walk. \nMatt Green’s approach to walking all the streets in New York is\, in some way\, the ultimate transcendental experience of finding the divine in nature and humanity. His curiosity and genuine interactions with the city and its people are an inspiration to slow down\, open our eyes\, and keep walking. \nPart of The Center’s BIG IDEA project The Bottomlessness of a Pond: Transcendentalism\, Nature and Spirit.

SUMMARY:FILM: Spettacolo (7pm screening)
DESCRIPTION:In Italy’s tiny Tuscany region lies Monticchiello\, whose residents have a most unusual annual ritual: they stage a play about their own lives\, starring themselves. Directors Jeff Malmberg and Chris Shellen’s Spettacolo (its title translated as “performance”) is a mesmerizing account of that yearly project\, tracing not only the logistical toil entailed by that endeavor (writing scripts\, building sets\, casting and rehearsing)\, but also the tenuousness of the tradition itself\, thanks to a younger generation less interested than their elders in maintaining it. Born from WWII trauma\, and functioning as a way to analyze and voice their contemporary concerns and grievances\, the play operates as an inimitable form of “auto-drama.” That the current show’s focus on economic anxieties is paralleled with a local-bank benefactor’s scandalous collapse only further underlines the intricate links here between fiction and non-fiction.  \nThis film allows viewers to reflect on not only the hold that stories have in small towns\, but also shows the inextricable bonds that international corporations have\, even in small Tuscan villages. As the world becomes ever busier\, and even small towns are pulled in varying directions\, what are we losing to the internet? Can we still gather and tell our stories? Can we make the time to sit outside on a summer night and be in community? \nPart of The Center’s BIG IDEA project Marketplaces: From Open Air to Online.

SUMMARY:FILM: Carmine Street Guitars (7pm screening)
DESCRIPTION:Once the center of the New York bohemia\, Greenwich Village is now home to lux restaurants\, and buzzer door clothing stores catering to the nouveau riche. But one shop in the heart of the Village remains resilient to the encroaching gentrification: Carmine Street Guitars. There\, custom guitar maker Rick Kelly and his young apprentice Cindy Hulej\, build handcrafted guitars out of reclaimed wood from old hotels\, bars\, churches and other local buildings. Nothing looks or sounds quite like a Rick Kelly guitar\, which is the reason they are embraced by the likes of Bob Dylan\, Lou Reed\, Patti Smith\, Jim Jarmusch\, just to name a few. Featuring a cast of prominent musicians and artists\, the film captures five days in the life of Carmine Street Guitars\, while examining an all-too-quickly vanishing way of life. \nThis film is a testament to the power of craft and that while technology and the internet plow on relentlessly\, there is no substitute for handmade\, unique instruments that reflect the personality and needs of both the maker and user. \nScreenings of the film will occur at 4:30 & 7pm. \nPart of The Center’s BIG IDEA Marketplaces: From Open Air to Online.

SUMMARY:FREE FILM: Dakota 38 (7pm screening)
DESCRIPTION:The Center’s 2018–2019 Film Series comes to a close Thursday\, April 18\, with Dakota 38—an award-winning documentary film from director Silas Hagerty that remembers the 38 Dakota men who were killed Dec. 26\, 1862\, in the largest mass execution in U.S. history. The film is part of The Center’s current BIG IDEA project\, Unraveling: Reimagining the Colonization in the Americas.  \nIn the spring of 2005\, Jim Miller\, a Native spiritual leader and Vietnam War veteran\, found himself in a dream riding on horseback across the Great Plains of South Dakota. Just before he awoke\, he arrived at a riverbank in Minnesota and saw 38 of his Dakota ancestors hanged. At the time\, Jim knew nothing of the execution\, which was ordered by Abraham Lincoln and took place on Dec. 26\, 1862. “When you have dreams\, you know when they come from the creator\,” said Miller. “As any recovered alcoholic\, I made believe that I didn’t get it. I tried to put it out of my mind\, yet it’s one of those dreams that bothers you night and day.”\n \nFour years later\, embracing the message of the dream\, Jim and a group of riders retrace the 330-mile route of his dream on horseback from Lower Brule\, South Dakota\, to Mankato\, Minnesota\, to arrive at the hanging site on the anniversary of the execution. “We can’t blame the wasichus anymore\,” said Miller. “We’re doing it to ourselves. We’re selling drugs. We’re killing our own people. That’s what this ride is about\, is healing.”\n \nDakota 38 is the story of their journey — the blizzards they endure\, the Native and non-Native communities that house and feed them along the way\, and the dark history they are beginning to wipe away. \n“We are honored to be screening this film\, and it’s being offered to the community free of charge in alignment with the wishes of Silas Hagerty\, the filmmaker\,” said Kristine Bretall\, The Center’s Director of Performing Arts. “The mission of this film is healing\, and Silas asks that it be screened as a gift in line with Native healing practices. We will accept donations to cover the cost of the screening\, but all are welcome and we do not want an admission fee to deter anyone from seeing this powerful film. I’d like to thank the Magic Lantern for helping us fulfill this request.” \n  \nPart of The Center’s BIG IDEA project Unraveling: Reimagining the Colonization in the Americas\, Mar 8–May 22\, 2019. \nRunning time 1 hour 58 minutes.

SUMMARY:FREE FILM: Dakota 38 (4:30pm screening)
DESCRIPTION:The Center’s 2018–2019 Film Series comes to a close Thursday\, April 18\, with Dakota 38 — an award-winning documentary film from director Silas Hagerty that remembers the 38 Dakota men who were killed Dec. I’d like to thank the Magic Lantern for helping us fulfill this request.” \nPart of The Center’s BIG IDEA project Unraveling: Reimagining Colonization of the Americas. \nRunning time 1 hour 58 minutes.

SUMMARY:FILM: Dawson City: Frozen Time (7pm screening)
DESCRIPTION:A work of resurrected living history\, Dawson City: Frozen Time is transportive in a manner few films—non-fiction or otherwise—achieve. Director Bill Morrison uses clips from hundreds of highly combustible nitrate silent-movie reels that were unearthed in the Yukon River outpost of Dawson City in 1978\, as well as archival photos and on-screen text\, to present a ghostly history lesson about northern Canada’s turn-of-the-century gold rush\, and of Dawson City itself. \nFrom the fires that frequently burned it to the ground\, to the indigenous populations that were pushed aside by settlers\, to the Hollywood and business luminaries that once lived there (including Donald’s Trump’s grandfather\, who began his fortune with a brothel)\, it’s an awe-inspiring sweeping study. Morrison further conjures a sense of the past—and of life’s impermanence—through expert montages of long-forgotten silent dramas and comedies. Set to Alex Somers’ gorgeous\, melancholy score\, those faded\, corrupted black-and-white images feel like echoes from a distant era\, here lovingly resurrected so that they might live again. \nPart of The Center’s BIG IDEA project Unraveling: Reimagining Colonization in the Americas\, Mar 8–May 22\, 2019. \nRunning time 2 hours.
