Applications for the 2015 Arts & Crafts Festival Now Being Accepted

Artists are invited to apply for the 2015 Sun Valley Center Arts & Crafts Festival, to be held August 7–9 at Atkinson Park in Ketchum. Applications are now available online at www.zapplication.org.

Applications for the Festival are due by midnight Friday, February 28, 2015. Through a competitive blind jury process, approximately 130 artists will be chosen to exhibit in this summer’s show. The application fee is $35.

Join the Sun Valley Center for the Arts as they present the 47th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival. This Festival is a juried fine arts and crafts show, held outdoors in beautiful Ketchum, Idaho with an annual attendance of over 10,000 during the three day event. The Ketchum/ Sun Valley area is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts and is also brimming with culture and nightlife. Check out the fly fishing scene, learn about the latest art gallery exhibits, hike in the Sawtooth Mountains, water ski on an alpine lake, bike the famous single-track, listen to an outdoor concert and of course visit the Sun Valley Center Arts and Crafts Festival. The possibilities are almost endless!

In 2013 the City of Ketchum was ranked #3 in America’s Top 12 Small-Town ArtPlaces. This mountain resort town is a year-round home to a well-educated, sophisticated community. Each summer Ketchum’s population swells to accommodate a large number of second homeowners, who come for the season, as well as summer tourists, who come for a week or weekend.

The Sun Valley Center for the Arts values and honors the work made by the individual artists. No commercial agents are allowed. A full list of rules and descriptions of categories is available at www.sunvalleycenter.org. This popular community event also includes artists’ demonstrations, live music, food vendors and a children’s activity area.

Full-time Blaine County residents will be granted an extra point in their favor during the jurying process to encourage local participation.

Artists who need help with or have questions about the application are invited to contact festival@sunvalleycenter.org or 208.726.9491 for more information.

7th Annual Casino Royale – a benefit for Company of Fools

On Saturday Jan 24, 2015, The Sun Valley Center for the Arts and Company of Fools will host the annual Casino Royale. Now in its seventh year, this high-rolling evening is further elevated with a new venue for 2015, taking place for the first time ever at the stunning Sun Valley Club.

The “Old Hollywood Glamour” of Sun Valley and its storied history inspires this year’s event. Guests will be transported by a red carpet arrival, stirring live performance, delicious drinks and delights, many opportunities to win fantastic raffle prizes and, of course, faux gambling, which makes the evening such an especially fun and unique experience.

This evening of gambling, cocktailing and fundraising is the year’s largest fundraiser that specifically benefits Company of Fools, a proud part of Sun Valley Center for the Arts. For 19 years the Fools have been delighting our valley both on stage and in the classroom with award-winning, professional theatre and their dynamic, artistic and educational programming. Casino Royale offers a wonderful opportunity to support the company as it continues to develop new ways to deepen and expand arts programming in the Wood River Valley. Join our 2015 Casino Chairs Lesley Andrus and Tim Black for one of the best “FUN-raisers” around!

2015 CASINO ROYALE RAFFLE

The most exciting 2015 Casino Royale raffle item is “It Happens in Sun Valley,” a ticket package for two for the valley’s major arts organization’s events. Developed in collaboration with Sun Valley Writers’ Conference, Sun Valley Film Fest and Sun Valley Company this collection highlights the abundance of world-class arts and cultural activities in the valley. Raffle winners will enjoy attending the 2015 Sun Valley Film Festival, 2015 Sun Valley Writer’s Conference, 2015 Sun Valley Ice Show & Dinner, 2015 Sun Valley Center Wine Auction Gala, a complimentary 2015 Guardian Membership to Sun Valley Center for the Arts and a collection of 2015 Center and Company of Fools events and performances, as well as a two-month Zenergy membership for one—an exhilarating package worth over $7,500!

The “Dine Around the Valley” raffle also returns this year—a collection of gift certificates worth more than $1,200 in dining at the valley’s favorite restaurants, including CK’s Real Food, Zou 75, Globus, and Cristina’s, just to name a few! Guests can also bid on the enticing “Red Carpet Roulette“ mystery gift boxes the night of the event; the bidding will start at $50 and contents are guaranteed to be valued a minimum of that amount (though many surprises will be worth considerably more such as one 2015/2016 full season ski pass from Sun Valley Company).

Black tie is optional, old Hollywood style is encouraged!

Private VIP tables have already sold out, but individual tickets are still available. The fun begins at 7pm on Saturday, January 24 at The Sun Valley Club. Tickets to Casino Royale are $150 per person and include $1,500 of “funny money,” which you can use to try your hand at black jack, poker and craps.

The Center’s BIG IDEA: Under the Influence of Rock & Roll

It’s hard to think of a cultural movement that’s more American or that’s had a greater influence on American life than Rock & Roll. This fall and winter, The Sun Valley Center for the Arts celebrates our musical and social heritage with the Under the Influence of Rock & Roll, a BIG IDEA multidisciplinary project. Programming opens with a gallery exhibition and opening celebration at The Center in Ketchum on November 21 and continues with films, concerts, workshops and more through January 30, 2015.

By the 1960s Rock & Roll had transcended the realm of music and had begun to shape an entire generation’s understanding of the world around them. For many fans, Rock & Roll offered an identity: it guided how they spent their money and time, how they dressed and wore their hair and who their friends were. Under the Influence of Rock & Roll speaks to how rock, born out of counter-culture rebellion, has permeated the very fabric of our country and our collective memories, from television and film to fashion and design to political and social history.

How are you influenced by Rock & Roll? Come enjoy programming for Under the Influence of Rock & Roll and learn more about this powerful force in our culture and how it’s figured in your life.

2014-15 Performing Arts Series Kicks Off with Portland Cello Project

The Sun Valley Center for the Arts will kick off their 2014–2015 Winter Concert Series on Saturday, October 25, with the wildly popular Portland Cello Project. This highly original and thrilling group will perform at 6:30pm at the Wood River High School Performing Arts Theater.

“Portland Cello Project has rabid fans, and with good reason,” said Kristine Bretall, Director of Performing Arts. “They are creative, playful, innovative—and maybe it goes without saying—but they are stunningly great musicians.” She added that the group is also guaranteed to surprise their audience with a versatile lineup: “They play everything from Bach to Brubeck to Beck. Expect to be wowed, by cellos, vocals, drums and more.”

8_Tarina_Westlund_PCP_250pxLocal music students will have a particularly special experience with Portland Cello Project. “These musicians are generous with their time and energies,” said Bretall, “and they’ll be working with three groups of students from the Wood River High School—Spiritus, B-Tones and the Wood River High School Chamber orchestra students—and all three groups will be a part of a few of the pieces during the evening concert.”

Since the group’s inception in late 2007, the Portland Cello Project (or PCP, as their fans affectionately call them), has wowed audiences all over the country with extravagant performances, everywhere from Prairie Home Companion to that punk rock club in the part of town your grandma warns you not to go to after dark. The group has built a reputation mixing genres and blurring musical lines and perceptions wherever they go. With a repertoire now numbering over 800 pieces of music, including many selections you wouldn’t normally hear from a cello, no two shows are alike.

Additional performances in the 2014–2015 Winter Performing Arts Series include:
•    Blues musician Guy Davis on December 12, 2014
•    Bill Payne, co-founder of Little Feat, on January 30, 2015
•    Brian Sanders’ JUNK dance company on March 19, 2015
•    TorQ Percussion Quartet on April 18, 2015

Tickets for individual performances are $25 for members, $35 for nonmembers, and $10 students for 18 and under. Tickets for the Performing Arts Series are still available to members for $112.50 for all five performances. A Performing Arts “Mini Series” is also available for $67.50; this covers January to March performances only, which includes Bill Payne, JUNK, and TorQ.
