A part of the multidisciplinary project Stories of a Changing China. Playwright, screenwriter and librettist, Hwang is best known as the author of M. Butterfly and Ch’inglish—a hit comedy about an American businessman in China. Hwang is a Pulitzer Prize finalist and won an Obie for M. Butterfly. A graduate of Stanford and Yale University’s School of Drama, Time Magazine has called Hwang, “the most important dramatist of American public life since Arthur Miller.”
