As a nod to those travelers who came before us and essentially invented the road trip, The Center is screening A Room with a View as a part of the multidisciplinary project, Wish You Were Here. This is the film that made everyone dream of escaping to Tuscany, wasn’t it? The Grand Tour of Europe was something that was a tradition amongst European upper class young men as a time to explore the cultural legacy of classical antiquity and the Renaissance and to see important sites and works of art and hear music. These travelers would have their Baedekers guide in hand and see the sites listed in the guide. Still today, travelers argue whether or not to use a guidebook, feeling trapped by the list of places one “must see” or whether to forge a new path and try to see things others haven’t.
