FILM: Love, Gilda (4:30pm screening)

Thursday, April 2, 4:30 pm

$10 member / $12 nonmember

LOVE, GILDA opens a unique window into the honest and whimsical world of beloved comedian and performer Gilda Radner, whose greatest role was sharing her story. Working with the Radner estate, director Lisa D’Apolito unearthed a collection of diaries and personal audio and videotapes documenting her childhood, her comedy career, her relationships and ultimately, her struggles with cancer. These never-before-seen-or-heard footage and journal entries form the narrative spine of the documentary, allowing Gilda to tell her own story – through laughter and sometimes tears.

In the many ways that people come together to play, improv and comedy are a powerful tool for creating a shared experience of fun. Gilda Radner was a comedian whose sense of silliness and willingness to throw herself into characters gave audiences a chance to let themselves go and connect to others. While play and comedy can bring lightness, it also can serve as a tool to unburden ourselves and to work through difficult circumstances. Do we sometimes hide behind laughter? Is that okay?
