This exhibition considers dazzle camouflage, a system of high-contrast, disruptive camouflage applied to U.S. and British naval ships during World Wars I and II. Uniting visual art with warfare, dazzle camouflaged ships featured geometric patterns of bold colors meant to make it difficult for enemy ships (especially U-boats) to determine a ship’s size, direction or speed. The exhibition features historic diagrams from the archives of the Fleet Library at RISD as well as dazzle-inspired artwork by contemporary artists Thomas Bangsted, Liz Collins, Stuart Elster, Carrie Schneider and Stephanie Syjuco.
