Peter Blodgett Lecture: On the History of Railroads and Tourism

“Defining America’s Playgrounds:  Railroads and the Promotion of Tourism in the Rocky Mountain West, 1915-1945”

Curator of Western American History at the Huntington Library Peter Blodgett will discuss the role of the transconti­nental railroad in promoting tourism in the American West. Blodgett recently curated the Huntington’s exhibition, Visions of Empire:  The Quest for a Railroad across America, 1840-1880. Blodgett received a bachelor’s in American History from Bowdoin College and a doctorate from Yale. He is particularly interested in how and why Americans travel.
