SOLD OUT! TEEN WORKSHOP: Printmaking: Playing Cards—Modern Old School

Saturday, September 28, 10:00 am

$10, pre-registration required

Delve into the long history of playing cards and printmaking in this class where students will design, carve, and print their own cards while considering the power of ink on paper in the digital age.

The history of playing cards is extensive, spanning over one thousand years. Just about every culture in the world has a version of playing cards. The prolific existence of playing cards across the globe is proof of a long history of cultural exchange, trading, and artistic practice. The power of the dissemination of information and goods has obviously changed with the digital age. With this class, we will look at the oldest form of printmaking (relief printmaking), and question where one of the oldest “games” on earth fits in with today’s technological world. Students will design their own playing card to print and will practice printing with ink on the printing press.

Supplies students need to bring:

  • Please pack a sack lunch.
  • Participants should bring any doodles or sketches that they use for inspiration.

About the Instructor:
Artist and printmaker Marne Elmore grew up in the Wood River Valley, and currently lives and works in Boise, where she enjoys making art, focusing on relief printmaking, painting, and drawing.

This workshops is a single day class and takes place from 10am-4pm.

TEEN WORKSHOPS—geared for kids in grades 6–12

Teen workshops provide students the opportunity to learn directly from a professional artist. Workshops are designed as either one or two-day classes that focus on a variety of art mediums and techniques to engage teens and build confidence and self-expression through art making. Workshops take place at The Center, Hailey.

Teen workshops are generously sponsored by Joyce B. Friedman and scholarships are available through the support of The Crisis Hotline.

“My Life Matters” Teen Workshop Scholarship in memory of the work of Sher Foster

The Crisis Hotline is proud to offer $250.00 in scholarship funds to Blaine County teens hoping to attend art workshops hosted by the Sun Valley Center of the Arts. These scholarships are to commemorate Sher Foster’s 12-year commitment to be a part of the solution helping those in crisis. It was Sher’s intention to pursue her lifelong love of painting and the arts upon her retirement. She was unable to achieve that. The Crisis Hotline hopes that the creation of this scholarship will enable Sher’s love of life and the arts to be lived vicariously through the enjoyment of these teens who will participate in the workshops.
