Sun Valley Opera House, Sun Valley
The Performing Arts Series starts on Friday, September 18, with The Bros. Landreth. These natives of Winnipeg, Manitoba, will take the stage at the Sun Valley Opera House with their blend of folk, roots, and alt-country. While it’s tempting to describe The Bros. Landreth’s music as Americana, they in fact put a unique north of the border spin on their folksy counterparts from the lower 48. The audience will pick up on their notable musical influences—such as Bonnie Raitt, Lyle Lovett, Little Feat and Derek Trucks.
BLACK VIOLIN

Black Violin will be doing an all-school performance at the Wood River Middle School while they are here and their residency is supported by Gayle Marie and, in part, with funds provided by the Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF), the Idaho Commission on the Arts (ICA), and the National Endowment for the Arts.
DALA
Thursday, November 12, 2015, 7pm
Wood River High School Performing Arts Theater, Hailey
The Toronto-based duo Dala is one of The Center’s most requested repeat performances. They’ll return to the valley on Thursday, November 12, with a concert at the Wood River High School Performing Arts Theater in Hailey. Local audiences fell hard a few years back for Dala’s inspired songwriting, gorgeous harmonies and engaging stage presences. They count The Beatles, Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan as their key treasured influences. The pair was drawn together by their shared love of the absurd—a quirky, irreverent and occasionally self-critical humor that comes out in their music and in their often hilarious onstage banter. Like Black Violin, Dala will be in residency as part of their time here and will be working with Wood River High School students. This residency is also supported by Gayle Marie and, in part, with funds provided by the Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF), the Idaho Commission on the Arts (ICA), and the National Endowment for the Arts.

VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE
By Christopher Durang
July 1–22, 2015
Liberty Theatre, Hailey
Directed by Gary C. Hopper
Company of Fools’ production of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike marks the Company’s first foray into the outrageously hysterical and often absurd world of playwright Christopher Durang. Guest director Gary C. Hopper returns after directing the Company’s wildly successful God of Carnage in 2012. In choosing this comedy, Company of Fools heralds its 20th Season with a play that opens up our senses—with laughter.
Synopsis:
Vanya and his adopted sister Sonia live a quiet life in the Pennsylvania farmhouse where they grew up, but their peace is disturbed when their movie star sister Masha returns unannounced with her twenty-something boy toy, Spike.
Deliriously funny! Comic acting raised to the level of high art… the theater erupts in booming gusts of laughter that practically shake the seats! –The New York Times
AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY
By Tracy Letts
September 30–October 17, 2015
Liberty Theatre, Hailey
Directed by John Moon
Living on stage—it is the foundation on which Company of Fools was built. August: Osage County brings the Company back to its roots in this complex ensemble-driven piece. It wouldn’t be a 20th Season without a play that shines a floodlight on family dynamics and on Company of Fools’ gift for telling stories of the human heart.
Synopsis:
A vanished father. A pill-popping mother. Three sisters harboring shady little secrets. When the large Weston family unexpectedly reunites after Dad disappears, their Oklahoman family homestead explodes in a tornado of repressed truths and unsettling secrets. One of the most important plays of recent years, August: Osage County unflinchingly—and uproariously—exposes the dark side of the Midwestern American family. Winner of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award.
In Tracy Letts’ ferociously entertaining play, the American dysfunctional family drama comes roaring into the 21st century with eyes blazing, nostrils flaring and fangs bared, laced with corrosive humor so darkly delicious and ghastly that you’re squirming in your seat even as you’re doubled-over laughing. –Variety
A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD
Music by Robert Reale/ Book & Lyrics by Willie Reale
December 16, 2015–January 3, 2016
Liberty Theatre, Hailey
Directed by John Glenn
As part of its 20th Season, Company of Fools is delighted to bring the Valley’s two favorite amphibians home for the holidays—FROG and TOAD! Last performed in 2010, this delightful play has been the subject of constant pleas from our Valley to restage the show for a whole new generation of children.
Synopsis:
The play remains true to the spirit of Arnold Lobel’s original stories as it follows two great friends—the cheerful and popular Frog and the rather naive Toad—through four fun-filled seasons. Waking from hibernation in the spring, they proceed to plant gardens, swim, rake leaves and go sledding, learning life lessons along the way, including a most important one about friendship and rejoicing in the attributes that make each of us different and special.
Anyone who cherishes musical theater and can beg or borrow a child from 4 up might be well advised to make a beeline in search of tickets for A Year with Frog and Toad. –The New York Times
OUTSIDE MULLINGAR
By John Patrick Shanley
February 17–March 5, 2016
Liberty Theatre, Hailey
Directed by Denise Simone
How fitting to end the 20th Season with the playwright who started Company of Fools’ journey to Idaho 20 years ago. For it was seeing the Company’s production of Mr. Shanley’s Danny and the Deep Blue Sea back in 1996 that prompted Bruce Willis to suggest giving Hailey, Idaho a try. And so they did. The rest, as they say, is history.
Synopsis:
Outside Mullingar is about the romance of Anthony and Rosemary, neighbors in rural Ireland who are nearing their middle years. The play is by turns poetic, uplifting, dark and funny as hell. Anthony is an introverted farmer and Rosemary is the woman who vows to have him at all costs. When Anthony’s father threatens to disinherit his son, Rosemary steps into the middle of a land feud and family eccentricities beyond what one might imagine. On the brink of romantic catastrophe, this one-of-a-kind Irish heroine fights against time and mortality in hopes of securing her dream of love.
In the work of John Patrick Shanley, the truth is as charming as it is painful, reality as touched with magic as it is factual, and existence as absolute as it is illusory. –BOMB magazine

It’s hard to think of a cultural movement that’s more American or that’s had a greater influence on American life than Rock & Roll. This fall and winter, The Sun Valley Center for the Arts celebrates our musical and social heritage with the Under the Influence of Rock & Roll, a BIG IDEA multidisciplinary project. Programming opens with a gallery exhibition and opening celebration at The Center in Ketchum on November 21 and continues with films, concerts, workshops and more through January 30, 2015.
By the 1960s Rock & Roll had transcended the realm of music and had begun to shape an entire generation’s understanding of the world around them. For many fans, Rock & Roll offered an identity: it guided how they spent their money and time, how they dressed and wore their hair and who their friends were. Under the Influence of Rock & Roll speaks to how rock, born out of counter-culture rebellion, has permeated the very fabric of our country and our collective memories, from television and film to fashion and design to political and social history.
How are you influenced by Rock & Roll? Come enjoy programming for Under the Influence of Rock & Roll and learn more about this powerful force in our culture and how it’s figured in your life.

The Sun Valley Center for the Arts will kick off their 2014–2015 Winter Concert Series on Saturday, October 25, with the wildly popular Portland Cello Project. This highly original and thrilling group will perform at 6:30pm at the Wood River High School Performing Arts Theater.
“Portland Cello Project has rabid fans, and with good reason,” said Kristine Bretall, Director of Performing Arts. “They are creative, playful, innovative—and maybe it goes without saying—but they are stunningly great musicians.” She added that the group is also guaranteed to surprise their audience with a versatile lineup: “They play everything from Bach to Brubeck to Beck. Expect to be wowed, by cellos, vocals, drums and more.”
Local music students will have a particularly special experience with Portland Cello Project. “These musicians are generous with their time and energies,” said Bretall, “and they’ll be working with three groups of students from the Wood River High School—Spiritus, B-Tones and the Wood River High School Chamber orchestra students—and all three groups will be a part of a few of the pieces during the evening concert.”
Since the group’s inception in late 2007, the Portland Cello Project (or PCP, as their fans affectionately call them), has wowed audiences all over the country with extravagant performances, everywhere from Prairie Home Companion to that punk rock club in the part of town your grandma warns you not to go to after dark. The group has built a reputation mixing genres and blurring musical lines and perceptions wherever they go. With a repertoire now numbering over 800 pieces of music, including many selections you wouldn’t normally hear from a cello, no two shows are alike.
Additional performances in the 2014–2015 Winter Performing Arts Series include:
• Blues musician Guy Davis on December 12, 2014
• Bill Payne, co-founder of Little Feat, on January 30, 2015

Sun Valley Center for the Arts announces their 2014-2015 Season that includes: the Performing Arts Series, the Lecture Series and Company of Fools Theatre 19th Season.
“As The Center is finishing up a wonderful summer of concerts, exhibitions, plays and classes for adults and kids, we are looking forward and are thrilled to share our upcoming season with our friends and community. Our mission is to engage our community through art and ideas, and the programs we have scheduled will do this in spades!” said Kristin Poole, Artistic Director for the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. “Starting in October with celebrated author Timothy Egan, we’ve created a number of ways for our community to come together and be stimulated, inspired and just have some fun. The list of programs is deep and varied including a dance performance with the athletic company, JUNK, to a night of puzzles with Will Shortz and a piece of theater that will appeal to all, Peter and the Starcatcher. “
In addition to Timothy Egan, who will be speaking as a part of the 2014-2015 Lecture Series and the “Big Idea” project Forests, Foraging and Fires, The Center’s 201 Lecture Series will bring NPR’s puzzle master Will Shortz to the valley for an evening of fun and games; rock photographer Ethan Russell will present a slide lecture titled Best Seat in the House which will include his iconic images of the Who, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones; social scientist and author of “The Hidden Brain”, Shankar Vedantam will be speaking as a part of The Center’s “Big Idea” project on The Brain; and finally, beloved and renowned author Ann Patchett will wrap up the season.
Company of Fools 19th Theatre Season starts with the amazing Peter and the Starcatcher by Rick Elice – based on the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. This 5-time Tony award-winning play is a “prequel” to Peter Pan and will be a wonderful way to spend time with kids and grandkids during the month of December. Following Peter and the Starcatcher, Company of Fools will present David Auburn’s Proof in February as a part of The Center’s “Big Idea” project on The Brain. The play follows Catherine, who after the death of her brilliant but unstable mathematician father, must deal with her own emotions and explores the question: how much of her father’s madness—or genius—will she inherit? Finally, in the summer in 2015, the Fools take on Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang. The 2013 Tony Award-winning Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is one of the most lauded Broadway plays of recent years.
The performing arts season weaves a blend of soloists and ensemble performances, outreach to the schools and a dance performance for 2014-2015. In October, the Portland Cello Project will be in residence to work with local students who will then perform a few selections during the concert. Late November is the start of The Center’s “Big Idea” project entitled, Under the Influence of Rock & Roll. This project will feature a gallery exhibition and two live concerts: the first with bluesman Guy Davis who will explore the roots of rock & roll. The second is with Little Feat co-founder and pianist extraordinaire Bill Payne. Coming back to the valley in March are Brian Sanders’ JUNK, a dance company that bridges the gap between dance and physical theater. Finally, in April, TorQ Percussion comes to the valley for a full week to perform all-school lecture demonstrations in Blaine County elementary schools and then will perform a full length concert.
